Thanksgiving Prayer

On this Thanksgiving Day, I just want to take a moment to wish you and yours a peace filled Thanksgiving holiday.  I believe that our children are smiling down on each of us, thankful and proud that we are their moms, and that we continue to carry them with us into the future - yes, they are our children and always will be and for that I feel blessed and thankful..Cherie Houston

Lovingly shared from TCF - Written by Charlotte Irick TCF, Idaho Falls, ID

I'm thankful this Thanksgiving
That my grief is not so new.
Last year it was so painful to
Think of losing you.

Death can't claim my love for you
Tho we are far apart,
Sweet memories will always be
Engraved upon my heart.

Time can never bring you back
But it can help me be
Thankful for the years of joy
You brought our family.

To all the parents with grief so new
I share your loss and sorrow
I pray you find with faith and time

The blessings of each Tomorrow.

Angel Moms

~ Written by “Shane’s Mom” Judi Walker

Judi began a group called “Angel Mom’s” after the death of her son Shane
Dedicated to all moms who have lost a child

ANGEL MOMS

We have shared our tears and our sorrow,
We have given encouragement to each other,
Given hope for a brighter tomorrow,
We share the title of grieving mother.

Some of us lost older daughters or sons,
Who we watched grow over the years,
Some have lost their babies before their lives begun,
But no matter the age, we cry the same tears.

We understand each others pain,
The bond we share is very strong,
With each other there is no need to explain,
The path we walk is hard and long.

Our children brought us together,
They didn't want us on this journey alone,
They knew we needed each other,
To survive the pain of them being gone.

So take my hand my friend,
We may stumble and fall along the way,
But we'll get up and try again,
Because together we can make it day by day.

We can give each other hope,
We'll create a place where we belong,
Together we will find ways to cope,
Because we are Angel Moms and together we are strong!

A Grieving Fathers Prayer

As so many celebrate Father's Day today, please remember those dads & grandfathers with angel children & grandchildren, who are on the same grief journey and share that  same sense of loss that we felt on Mother's Day.. how well they too know that never ending heartache that time can't erase..  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers and if you see them today, give them a special hug and remind that you remember them and their child and their pain and pray that they find peace and joy in their child/children's memories..

A Grieving Father’s Prayer
~ written by Laura/Heavenly Lights Children’s Memorial ~ www.heavenlylights.homestead.com

Our Father… Who art in heaven…
I come to you with a heavy heart today…
I know you know… but I have lost my child…
And am feeling like I lost my way.

People seem to think I am so strong…
I am not invincible…I am not superman…
I am just a grieving father… missing my child
And could use a friendly helping hand.

I have always been the fixer-upper type of dad…
I could fix anything…ever since I was ten…
But I cannot fix the clock of time…
But, Please God, can you help me wind it up again?

Please bless all the grieving fathers…
Each hour throughout this day…
With the strength to keep moving ahead…
Even one baby step at a time…would be okay.

Please bless all grieving fathers…
Each day throughout this week…
And guide them on their journey of grief…
As the meaning of life they do seek.

Please bless all grieving fathers…
Each week this whole month through…
With memories to last a lifetime…
And understanding friends to turn to.

Please bless all grieving fathers
Each month throughout this year…
With hugs to comfort…in our time of need
And people to realize our grief doesn’t disappear.

Please bless all grieving fathers…
Each year until the end of time…
With faith in You…to see us through
From sunrise to sunset…for our whole lifetime.

Please God Bless all grieving fathers…
Each day throughout this year…
As seasons change…
And time unfolds…
Day by day…
Month by month…
Year by year…
And especially today…on this Father’s Day.

Amen

The Cord

THE CORD
~Author Unknown~

We are connected, my child and I,
by an invisible cord, not seen by the eye.
It’s not like the cord that connects us ‘til birth
this cord can’t be seen by any on Earth.

This cord does its work right from the start,
It binds us together attached to my heart.
I know that it’s there though no one can see,
the invisible cord from my child to me.

The strength of this cord Is hard to describe,
It can’t be destroyed, it can’t be denied.
It’s stronger than any cord man could create
It withstands the test, can hold any weight.

And though you are gone,
Though you’re not here with me,
The cord is still there but no one can see.

It pulls at my heart,
I am bruised….I am sore.
But this cord is my lifeline as never before.

I am thankful that God
Connects us this way
A Mother and Child~
Death can’t take it away!

Today is Valentines Day-A Dozen Roses

Today is Valentine's Day, and whether or not you celebrated the holiday before, it is ever so painful to not have our children around to say those words to.  Here is a poem that Anne at the Tony Brown Foundation wrote to help celebrate the love we all share for our children.
~ Anne at the Tony Brown Foundation (2011)

A DOZEN ROSES

If I had a dozen roses,
I know just what I’d do
I’d give each one a name
 that reminded me of you

The first rose I’d call sunshine
because you brighten everyday
The second would be beauty
the kind that never goes away

The third rose would be priceless
like those hugs you gave to me
I’d name the fourth rose silly
oh how funny you could be

Rose five of course is patience
something you have helped me find
The sixth rose would be memories
the gift you left behind

The seventh and the eighth rose
would for sure be faith and grace
Nine would be unique because
no one can take your place

The tenth rose well that’s easy
I’d simply name it love
Eleven would be angel
I know you’re watching from above

I’d think about that twelfth rose
and I’d really take my time
After all these roses
are for you my Valentine

I’m sending them to heaven
in every color that I know
So twelve I’ll name forever
that’s how long I’ll love you so

As I sit in heaven

AS I SIT IN HEAVEN
(Author Unknown)

As I sit in heaven
And watch you everyday
I try to let you know with signs
I never went away

I hear you when you're laughing
And watch you as you sleep
I even place my arms around you
To calm you as you weep

I see you wish the days away
Begging to have me home
So I try to send you signs
So that you know you aren't alone

Don't feel guilt that you have
Life that was denied to me
Heaven is truly beautiful
Just you wait and see

So live your life, laugh again
Enjoy yourself - be free
Then I know with every breath you take
You'll be taking one for me

I love you and always will.....

I Will Be There Mom..

I WILL BE THERE
~ By Sharon J. Bryant

Mom, tomorrow I will be there
Though you may not see
I'll smile and remember
The last Christmas, with you and me

Don't be sad mom
I'm never far away
Your heart has hidden sight
My memory will always stay

I watched as you touched the ornaments
Sometimes a tear was shed as you did
I touched you gently on your shoulder
And on tiptoes I proudly stood

I'm only gone for a little while mom
I'm waiting for the day to be
When God calls out your name mom
We'll be together, just you wait and see

But until that time comes
Carry on as you did when I was there
I tell the angels how much I love you
There are angels here everywhere!

I stand behind you some days
When I know that you are sad
I want you to be happy mom
It would make my heart so glad

So on this Christmas Eve, Mom
Think of me as I will be thinking of you
And touch that special ornament
That I once made for you

I love you mom and dad, also
I know you know I do
And I'll be waiting here for you
When your earthly life is through

Love, Your child in Heaven

I Will Be There (Tomorrow) Mom...

In the past I've posted this poem the day before Christmas - Christmas Eve.  But I know myself, I need to be reminded of this throughout the month of December and quite honestly throughout the entire holiday season from Halloween until after New Year's Day...

So, I want to share this with you early this year on the night before Hanukkah because it applies to all moms, no matter your religious persuasion, ( I'll post it again Christmas Eve), in the hopes that it will remind you, as it does me, that your child(or children) are with you - maybe not in body as we'd wish, but with us nonetheless...  I pray this helps to give you a little more strength and peace this holiday season - Lots of hugs and love.... Mom's little white lies....

I've met a lot of mom's who are in this private club of "grieving moms" since my first child, Randee Marie, died in March 1971 and I think this poem describes almost every one of those moms very accurately.... Sad isn't it, that typically the only one who recognizes those "little white lies" are another mom from the same private club... This poem is from each of our angel children "to those around us!!!  ... Cherie Houston
ASK MY MOM HOW SHE IS

My Mom, she tells a lot of lies,
She never did before.
But from now until she dies,
She'll tell a whole lot more.

Ask my Mom how she is
And because she can't explain,
She will tell a little lie
Because she can't describe the pain.

Ask my Mom how she is,
She'll say "I'm alright."
If that's the truth, then tell me,
why does she cry each night?

Ask my Mom how she is,
She seems to cope so well.
She didn't have a choice you see,
Nor the strength to yell.

Ask my Mom how she is,
"I'm fine, I'm well, I'm coping."
For God's sake Mom, just tell the truth,
Just say your heart is broken.

She'll love me all her life,
I loved her all of mine.
But if you ask her how she is,
She'll lie and say she's fine.

I am Here in Heaven.
I cannot hug from here.
If she lies to you don't listen,
Hug her and hold her near.

On the day we meet again,
We'll smile and I'll be bold.
I'll say, "You're lucky to get in here, Mom,
With all the lies you told!"

I love you Mom – Happy Mother’s Day!

KITE MEMORIES

Isn't it amazing how so many little things remind us of our children when they were little, and for those of us whose children have "gone too soon" those memories can be so very bittersweet.  They can bring a smile one moment and trigger an avalance of tears the next...  For me "kites" can do that - remembering my boys when they were little and how much they love to fly kites.  This is something that Dan and I love doing now with our grandchildren, at my favorite spot in Newport, RI - on the edge of the ocean, but now even with all their smiles & giggles and running about, those kites also remind me of this poem and our wish that our children who are gone too soon, might also be "floating freely - peacefully - above"...   Thank you Marcia for sharing this with us... Cherie Houston

KITE MEMORIES
~ by Marcia Alig, TCF/NJ

Brushed golden by the sun
A kite flies free above greening meadow,
Drifting lazily until it turns to catch the eddy of
A flock of trumpeting geese homeward bound.

Fragrance of early Spring flowers
Makes me giddy with the thought
That You too fly unfettered to drift or chase dreams,
Dreams beyond imagination,
Unrestrained by life or expectations.

Now I cherish each kite that rises to the wind
Because it fills me with memories,
Memories of your gifts of love.

BUT….only sometimes…..
I wonder whether you remember, too.

Sweet Dreams

~ Author Unknown, but dedicated to her daughter Rachel

SWEET DREAMS

Last night I held you in my dream

And rocked you in my arms.

I sang to you a lullaby

As we snuggled to keep warm.

It felt so natural and real,

That when I was awakened,

I rushed to be with you, my child,

But knew I was mistaken.

Your life was ended way too soon;

As if it had just started.

Somehow I know I must go on,

Although we’ve sadly parted.

Your pain and suffering is no more;

Your soul’s found peace at last.

Someday I hope to join you and

Live our dreams of past.

I STILL MISS HER!

I STILL MISS HER!
~ Author Unknown
Do you still miss her?
Someone asked today.
It’s been over twenty years,
Hasn’t the pain gone away?
I admit, I’m doing better.
I never thought I would.
I even laugh again,
I was sure I never could.
Still some of my days darken
When I hear a certain song,
Especially during holidays
When family ties are strong.
I know that I am healing,
I have learned to survive.
I live my life again
With the pain that’s deep inside.
Yes, I still miss her
And sometimes I still cry
In my heart we are together,
My little Angel and I.

Butterfly Dust Poem

On this Valentine's Day as we remember our children, I hope you will enjoy this poem.  I don't remember when I received this - I know it was before my son Bobby died  but since my daughters Randee and Robin died, no I'm not sure why or from whom, but I've had it quite some time and hope you might might enjoy it as much as I do.. it reminds me that life was never meant to go the way we'd hoped - that's normal - but if we enjoy the moments we are blessed with as they are happening, then they will never be lost...  Happy Valentines Day to each of you.. Cherie Houston

Butterfly Dust
~ by James A. Kisner ~

Remembering when I was young so many years ago,
About the things that kids will try because they want to know.
Someone had told me way back then of something I should try,
That I could flap my arms and fly just like a butterfly.

I didn't know if it was true or if he fibbed to me,
But I had to try because of curiosity.
He told me if you caught a dozen butterflies or so,
And gently rubbed them on your arms and legs and let them go.

The dust that was upon their wings would start to make you light,
And if you caught enough of them the dust would give you flight.
So all day long out in a field I did what I was told,
And thought of being Peter Pan when I was 5 years old.

I caught the little butterflies and rubbed them on my skin,
My arms and legs and everywhere, I even rubbed my chin.
He had said a dozen but I strived for even more,
I wanted more than I would need so I could really soar.

Late that afternoon I felt that it was time to try,
I now had all the powder of a giant butterfly.
Excitement overwhelmed me as I climbed upon a fence,
In my mind it had to work, it had made so much sense.

So standing on the fence post with my arms outstretched and tight,
Planning all my destinations on my maiden flight.
Should I go see Mikey and land in his yard some place?
Or should I just fly by my mom so I can watch her face?

Maybe I should just take off and plan it in the air,
Once I get the hang of it, I can go anywhere.
Now the moment has arrived; I leap and look around,
But suddenly I find myself just sitting on the ground.

I must have done it wrong, I should have flapped my arms I know,
Even butterflies must flap their wings to make them go.
So on the fence post I would go and find the secret power,
Trying everything I knew which took almost an hour.

Finally sitting on the ground after my last try,
I faced the grim reality that it was just a lie.
Dusting myself off and sadly going on my way,
I realized at that young age to watch what people say.

Thinking back over the years the lessons I have learned,
Thinking of that first time when my trusting heart was spurned.
Realizing now as then some people can be cruel,
Getting much enjoyment out of making you the fool.

But such is life and as we age we learn from our mistakes,
Sometimes trusting brings you joy but other times heartaches.
But trust we do and trust we must to live in harmony,
Realizing in this life that what will be will be.

Life is never what we want or goes how we have planned,
Sometimes life will throw you curves that we don't understand.
Sometimes in our happiness our life comes crashing down,
And in our pain we feel as if we're sprawled upon the ground

One day we feel as if we soar like eagles in their flight,
When everything that life can bring seems beautiful and right.
But in a moment life can change; the pendulum will swing,
And painful heartache mixed with tears is what the day will bring.

As life goes on you realize that everyday is new,
And what you thought was in the future now comes into view.
Life has a way of fleeing by before our very eyes,
And suddenly we realize it caught us by surprise.

So as you plan the future and whatever comes your way,
Don't forget to take the time to just enjoy today.
Tomorrow is not promised it is just a future plan,
Today the sun is shining so enjoy it while you can.

Then as you do remember life will sometimes bring you pain,
But always brings experience and wisdom we can gain.
So as we travel through this life we live and love and trust,
And smile and know that sometimes life can be like butterfly dust.

You Can

YOU CAN

You can shed tears that he or she is gone,

Or you can smile because he or she lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that he or she will come back,

Or you can open your eyes and see all that he or she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him,

Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him or her and remember ONLY that he or she is gone,

Or you can cherish his or her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,

OR you can do what he or she would want……….

SMILE, open your eyes,

LOVE and go on.

Poem - "The Year Before Last"

Most of us can relate to this poem - that moment when we first realize that our child is not going to live in the New Year - it shouldn't shake us to the core, but for many it does - it catches our breath - it brings new tears and sadness, and know that all of those feelings are normal... this poem reflects the feelings so many of us have shared when that moment comes and we realize a new year is ahead, a year in which our child will not participate and that saddens us...
The Year Before Last
~ by Unknown
The holiday season is approaching,
and with it comes the New Year.
Although for me time passes slowly,
New Year's Day will ring in quickly.
I dread this New Year's Day
because they will look at me
in a terribly strange way
when I get misty-eyed,
and talk about something you had done.
After you first left me,
they reasoned when I cried,
"He's only been gone a few months."
And I would catch that look of
understanding in their eyes,
and found some comfort that they knew.
But on last New Year's Day,
my first thought upon awakening was,
Oh God, my son died last year,
not just a few months ago, not even this year,
but last year.
He will never live in this year.
They didn't understand, they didn't reason,
that last year, for me, the loss was still new.
They thought, "It happened last year,
so long ago, why does she still cry?"
I could see it in their eyes.
This New Year's Day, will it be different?
Will my first thought upon awakening be,
Oh God, my son died the year before last,
not a few months ago, not this year or even last year,
but the year before last?
He will never live in this year.
Will they even listen, should I not look them
in the eyes, for fear that I shall see,
"Why is she still crying? It happened so long ago.
It was the year before last."
Those words that we use
to describe the passage of time,
a few months, this year,
last year, the year before last.
They don't know that time stands still for me.
Will they understand that's why I cry?
Don't they know
my son just died ...
the year before last?

My First Christmas in Heaven

From my family to yours, I wish for you a day of peace & joy filled memories of your precious child. Yes, Christmas will always be very different, but I truly believe that they are all celebrating amongst the angels..

I really don't remember who sent the following poem to me in 2009, that first holiday after Bobby died, but thank you if you ar reading htis...  I hope sharing it today, will help each and every one of you find some peace... This is another example of a favorite quote “from the mouth's of babes... “this is certainly one of those and I’m sure reflects the feelings of all our children if they could have spoken to us on their first Christmas in heaven... Cherie Houston

This poem was written by a 13 year old boy who died of a brain tumor that he had battled for four years. He died on December 14, 1997. He gave this to his mom before he died. His name was Ben.

MY FIRST CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN

I see the countless Christmas trees around the world below
With tiny lights, like Heaven's stars, reflecting on the snow

The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away the tear
For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I hear the many Christmas songs that people hold so dear
But the sounds of music can't compare with the Christmas choir up here.

I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,
For it is beyond description, to hear the angels sing.

I know how much you miss me, I see the pain inside your heart.
But I am not so far away, We really aren't apart.

So be happy for me, dear ones, You know I hold you dear.
And be glad I'm spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.

I sent you each a special gift, from my heavenly home above.
I sent you each a memory of my undying love.

After all, love is a gift more precious than pure gold.
Was always most important in the stories Jesus told.

Please love and keep each other, my Father said to do.
I can't count the blessing or love he has for each of you.

So have a Merry Christmas and Wipe away that tear
Remember, I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year

I Will Be There (Tomorrow)

I want to thank Saundra Blade from Clinton, Indiana for sending me the link to this special website www.angelabode.com/holidayideas.html

This website, started by a mom like us, has ideas and tips from other mom’s who are grieving for their child or children during the holidays…    Here is an excerpt and special poem that I loving borrowed from the website, which I believe we can all relate to this Christmas Eve.

May you and your family find peace this Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and I pray we find joy from our memories, even if they are sprinkled with tears..  Cherie Houston

Hugs from Heaven

HUGS FROM HEAVEN
~ by Charlotte Anselmo

When you feel a gentle breeze,
caress you when you sigh
It's a hug sent from Heaven,
From a loved one way up high.

If a soft and tender raindrop,
lands upon your nose
They've added a small kiss,
As fragile as a rose.

If a song you hear fills you
with a feeling of sweet love
It's a hug sent from Heaven,
from someone special up above.

If you awaken in the morning,
to a bluebird's chirping song
It's music sent from Heaven,
to cheer you all day long.

If tiny little snowflakes,
land upon your face
It's a hug sent from Heaven,
trimmed with Angel lace.

So keep the joy in your heart,
if you're lonely my dear friend
Hugs that are sent from Heaven,
a broken heart will mend.
